Griefing is the act of causing annoyance to an online community, specifically by intentionally disrupting the otherwise good experience for some players.[1] In the context of Minecraft and 2b2t, griefing is generally associated with players destroying structures made by others, altough the word can be used for any act that limit's other player's ability to enjoy the game.
History
Destruction
Since the original game does not offer real protection, destruction can be seen as a crucial part of the game. TNT was added to the game as early as October 2009, during its ‘Classic’ phase. In the early days of Minecraft, multiple griefing groups, most notably Team Avolition, appeared and raided unprotected servers. Some dedicated griefers developed their own hacked clients to grief as efficiently as possible, targeting entire servers.
As an anarchy server, 2b2t has always attracted griefers. The earliest documented griefing group was The Pylandiaa, known for targeting xcc2’s base NFE in early 2011. Over time players would use backdoors, exploits or social manipulation to obtain access to more bases and grief them.
2b2t witnessed the rise of multiple groups, such as Nerds Inc, the 4th Reich, the Backstreet Boys[2] and the Fifth Column[3], that mostly focused on targeting other groups by destroying their builds. They used a wide variaty of methods to obtain bases and 'stashes', ranging from 'insiding' to backdoors and coordinate Exploits. Many griefers on 2b2t consider griefing a crucial aspect of anarchy servers, since everything is supposed to be uncertain. Destroying buildings can also be seen as a form of appreciation. Some players even consider griefing a form of art: using specific modules to perform the griefs as efficiently as possible and recording the grief to showcase the buildings and their demise later on. Critics see griefing as a destructive form of behavior that undoes days, sometimes months of work without much effort. Griefing is often used as a defense mechanism as well, when the builders of a base decide to destroy their own creation, rather than giving another group the ability to grief their base.
Some 'griefs' have had a larger impact on the wider server, with the most notable of these griefs being that of Imperator's Base, The Lands, Mu, and SkyMasons.
Kick exploits
Kick exploits have also been used to limit or 'grief' player's experiences of the game. Examples include the FPS Exploit, the Boat Kick and the Bookban Exploit.
